Training
You'll receive comprehensive training for your role in the Navy, along with opportunities to gain professional, trade and tertiary qualifications.
World-class training that sets you up for life
In the Navy you'll gain knowledge and skills that will benefit your whole career. We'll prepare you for the unique demands of life ashore and at sea, ensure you're fit enough to carry out your duties, and invest heavily in your personal and vocational development.
Sailor Training
The focus of this comprehensive training is to take the strengths and qualities you already possess and build on them, encouraging you to be your best. It's an exciting blend of physical training, practical exercises and classroom learning, and leaves recruits with a huge sense of achievement.
In this beautiful location, you’ll be introduced to Navy life, learn about our time-honoured traditions, and gain the skills and knowledge you'll need to embark on a Navy career. Among many other things you'll study:
- How to live and work with a close-knit team
- Ceremonial and drill
- Equity and diversity
- The use of weapons
- Basic ships duties
- Uniform maintenance
- First aid, and
- Survival at sea.
One of the most exciting and satisfying parts of the Sailor Training course is the week-long deployment on the Seahorse Spirit, a 72-metre ocean-going vessel. You'll steer the ship, take part in watches, learn about navigation, and get a real feel for life on a Navy vessel.
You'll need a reasonable level of fitness to gain entry into all our courses. If you're a fairly active person who spends some time exercising and playing sport, you should have no trouble meeting Navy requirements.
Once in the Navy, fitness training will be part of your job, and most recruits really enjoy the challenge. PT instructors will guide you through activities such as obstacle courses, boxing classes, circuits and other exercises; and their priority is to help you succeed in tests and maintain a good level of fitness.
Greatness Awaits

If you choose to gain a degree through the Australian Defence Force Academy as part of becoming a Navy Officer, you will undertake the New Entry Officer Course and six month’s Navy familiarisation before commencing your studies at the ADFA campus in Canberra. Part of the University of New South Wales, ADFA offers a world-class education in parallel with military training and you'll receive a salary and benefits as you study there.
You can apply for a role in the Navy while still studying for a relevant degree at any approved university; and join us if accepted. Then you concentrate on your studies, while enjoying a salary, assistance with your HELP fees and many other benefits.
During a break in semesters you will attend the Undergraduate Entry Course at the Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay. This will give you an insight into Navy life, and equip you with basic skills and knowledge.
You'll need a reasonable level of fitness to gain entry into all our courses. If you're a fairly active person who spends some time exercising and playing sport, you should have no trouble meeting Navy requirements.
During Officer training, PT instructors will guide you through a variety of activities including obstacle courses and gym programs, encouraging you to be your best. They organise sporting competitions too, and many recruits find this side of Navy life very rewarding.
Your learning never stops
Once you've finished the New Entry Officer Course or have graduated from Recruit School, and have passed your Initial Employment Training, you can go on to receive specialist training and education in your chosen field. In some cases your training may take place interstate, at sea or abroad; and through the Defence Assisted Study Scheme you may qualify for time off to complete chosen courses and sit exams.
As well as specialist training courses, the Navy also operates promotion courses to prepare you for higher rank and the responsibilities that go with it.
